JP Morgan Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Access

The financial institution has informed staff members moving into its new headquarters in Manhattan that they are required to provide their physical characteristics to access the multi-billion skyscraper.

Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory

The financial firm had previously envisioned for the enrollment of employee biometrics at its new skyscraper to be discretionary.

Yet, workers of the US's largest bank who have commenced employment at the new headquarters since August have been sent communications stating that biometric entry was now "required".

The Technology Behind Entry

The new entry system necessitates personnel to submit their eye patterns to enter security gates in the entrance area in place of using their identification cards.

Headquarters Details

The corporate tower, which reportedly cost $3bn to build, will eventually serve as a workplace for ten thousand staff members once it is fully occupied before year-end.

Protection Reasoning

The banking institution declined to comment but it is assumed that the implementation of biological markers for access is created to make the building safer.

Special Cases

There are exemptions for some employees who will still be able to use a ID card for entry, although the criteria for who will use more standard badge entry remains undefined.

Complementary Digital Tools

In addition to the introduction of biometric readers, the company has also released the "Work at JPMC" digital platform, which acts as a digital badge and portal for employee services.

The platform allows staff to coordinate external entry, explore indoor maps of the premises and arrange in advance meals from the premises' multiple restaurant options.

Broader Safety Concerns

The deployment of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, particularly those with significant operations in New York, look to increase security following the attack of the chief executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in recent months.

The CEO, the leader of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from the financial district.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is uncertain if the banking institution plans to deploy biometric access for personnel at its offices in other important economic centers, such as the British financial district.

Corporate Surveillance Context

The action comes amid discussion over the use of digital tools to track workers by their companies, including monitoring workplace presence.

Earlier this year, all staff members on flexible arrangements were directed they are required to come back to the workplace full-time.

Management Commentary

The organization's head, Jamie Dimon, has referred to the bank's recently opened 60-storey headquarters as a "impressive representation" of the institution.

The executive, one of the global financial leaders, this week cautioned that the probability of the financial markets crashing was much more substantial than many financiers thought.
