Teenager Found Dead Following False Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was found dead just days after being falsely accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation learned how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was not taken in the first place".
Media reports about the alleged stolen remains attracted online comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his mother said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who resided there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a young adult encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's family telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his family said they never receive that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead investigator informed the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely untruths were subsequently embellished and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."
The official determined: "Exists no proof that the acts or failures of any agency led to or added to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is not possible to determine his intent."
